Definition of building services

Building services can be defined as the elements needed to allow a building to function, and provide for the occupants needs. These elements include air conditioning, ventilation, heating, water services, gas, electricity, lighting, power, fire alarm, voice and data systems and of late renewable energy requirements.
Lifts to provide disabled access or access for goods and people in multi-storey offices and residencies.
Buildings such as hospitals will require a wide range of specialist installations including medical gases, nurse call and services to X-ray departments, including linear accelerators, MRI and CT scanners.

Laboratories may require fume and safety cabinets and specialist gases such as nitrogen, compressed air etc. Clean rooms, operating theatres and sterile supply areas require specialist filtration and air flow pattern regimes.
Large domestic developments may require the investigation coordiantion and design of infrastrcture services in liason with the utility companies
